Mexico will play a unique role at the 2026 FIFA World Cup: as the host nation in its own stadium. The tournament will kick off on June 11 at the legendary Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, where Mexico will face South Africa. Never before has a Mexican national team found itself in such a position. Coach Javier Aguirre is in his third term as national team coach and knows exactly the pressure and expectations of a soccer-crazy nation.
Mexico's goalkeepers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup
Coach Javier Aguirre has named three goalkeepers to El Tri’s roster: Raúl Rangel, Guillermo Ochoa, and Carlos Acevedo. Mexico is a co-host and will open the tournament on June 11 with the opening match against South Africa at the newly renovated Estadio Azteca in Mexico City—the first opening match on Mexican soil since 1986. South Korea and the Czech Republic also await in Group A. The trio of goalkeepers brings together the greatest goalkeeping talent of the current Liga MX generation, a living legend on the verge of a world record, and an experienced starting goalkeeper who is the surprise selection on the roster.
Ochoa, 40, is set to compete in his sixth World Cup. This will make him the first Mexican player ever to reach this milestone, and one of only three players worldwide—alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo—to have actively participated in six consecutive World Cup tournaments since 2006. His last appearance for the national team was 561 days ago, when Aguirre called him up for the World Cup warm-up matches against Portugal and Belgium. In the friendly against Australia at the Rose Bowl, he came on as a substitute and received a standing ovation.
Ochoa currently plays for AEL Limassol in Cyprus. His career has taken him from América to Ajaccio, Standard Liège, Málaga, Granada, Sampdoria, Club América, Salernitana, Almería, and PAOK, before landing at the Cypriot first-division club. With over 152 international appearances, he is Mexico’s most-capped goalkeeper. The decision to nominate him was controversial in Mexico—but for Aguirre, it was clear: You don’t send a legend home without a farewell.

Rangel, 26, is Aguirre’s clear first choice. His entire career has been spent within the Chivas family: He played in the youth system at Guadalajara, spent four seasons as the starting goalkeeper for the Tapatío farm team in the Liga de Expansión MX, before making his first-division debut for Chivas in October 2023. Since then, he has established himself as one of the most consistent goalkeepers in Liga MX. In the 2024/25 season, he started all 33 league games and recorded 12 shutouts—the best numbers of his career to date. This season, he has made 34 appearances for Chivas, where he is rated 7.07 on FotMob.
He made his international debut in June 2024 and has since earned 11 caps. With the national team, he won the 2024/25 CONCACAF Nations League and the 2025 Gold Cup—two titles in his first season as the starting goalkeeper. His contract with Chivas runs through 2028. Rangel embodies what Aguirre is building for Mexico: young, homegrown, and reliable.
Acevedo, 29, is the most surprising selection on the entire Mexican squad. He has been under contract with Santos Laguna since 2017—a remarkably long period of club loyalty in Liga MX. This season, he has made 29 league appearances after suffering a minor setback with a brief injury in February 2026. In his best season—the 2020/21 Apertura/Clausura—he played in 42 league matches and recorded 13 shutouts, one of the strongest statistical goalkeeping performances in the league during that period. At the international level, he has only six caps—all in the CONCACAF Nations League and Copa América qualifiers. Aguirre values him as an experienced third-choice goalkeeper with a long history in the top flight.
