4-Finger Goalkeeper Gloves: Why Pros Wear Them & Benefits for Injuries

4-Finger-Torwarthandschuhe: Warum Torwart-Profis sie tragen & Vorteile bei Verletzungen

Time and again in professional football, you see goalkeepers taking to the pitch wearing specially adapted goalkeeper gloves where two fingers are joined together. What looks like a makeshift solution at first glance is actually a clever method to deliver maximum performance despite finger injuries.

But what is really behind the 4-finger glove and what benefits does this technique offer you?

Why are two fingers joined together?

The method of taping an injured finger to a healthy neighbouring finger is known in the medical field as "Buddy Taping". The healthy finger serves as a natural splint for the injured one.

For goalkeepers, the little finger and the ring finger are usually joined together, as the little finger (pinky) is statistically most prone to injuries like capsule tears, sprains, or fractures when a ball hits the hand awkwardly

The 3 Decisive Advantages for Your Goalkeeping

A 4-finger model is far more than just a rehab measure. It offers tangible benefits that can give you back the necessary confidence in goal:

1. Maximum Stability and Protection
Connecting two fingers creates a stronger, more compact unit. The risk of a weakened or injured finger bending backwards (hyperextension) or snapping sideways upon impact from a hard shot is drastically reduced.

2. Improved Feel and Security
Pros like Oliver Baumann often describe the feeling as giving enormous security. A single, injured finger can no longer get caught in the turf or twisted. The mental security allows you to go fully for the ball in dangerous situations again.

3. Larger Catching Surface
Joining the fingers creates a wider, uniform surface on the outside of the hand, which can help when punching and blocking.

Who is a 4-finger glove suitable for?

This special type of glove is the ideal solution for any goalkeeper who:

  • ✅ Is recovering from a finger injury (capsule tear, fracture).
  • ✅ Struggles with chronic finger pain.
  • ✅ Is looking for more stability preventatively.

DIY: Sew Your Own 4-Finger Gloves

Want to make your own 4-finger gloves? With a little craftsmanship and patience, you can modify an old glove. Here is our step-by-step guide:

What You Need:

  • A used goalkeeper glove
  • Sharp scissors
  • Needle and strong thread (ideally nylon or waxed thread)

Step 1: Preparation

Choose a used glove for your first attempts and decide which two fingers you want to sew together.

Little Tip: Do NOT sew the ring finger and little finger together on your first try. These two fingers are the most difficult to work on. Try it with the index and middle finger first.

Step 2: Separate Body from Gussets

Open the seams at the gussets (the material between the fingers). Then you can slowly and carefully separate the gussets from the upper material.

Step 3: Turn Glove Inside Out

Turn the entire glove inside out. The inside of your goalkeeper gloves must face you. This prevents the latex foam from being damaged and annoying seams from covering the grip.

Step 4: Sew Gloves Together

Sew the two fingers together so that eventually two fingers become one large one. Work carefully and ensure the seam is tight.

Step 5: Turn Glove Back to Original Position

Almost done! Finally, you just have to turn the glove back to the right side.
